Mike Digout has liked wandering along the Saskatchewan River near his house in Saskatoon, Canada, ever since he started working from home, taking his camera with him to record the magnificent wildlife that inhabits the area. He’d never been a fan of Canadian geese before, but that changed last spring when he met a magnificent goose mother who looks after a huge family.
According to Mike, who spoke to The Dodo,
“I went out every night along the river looking for beavers, and there was a lot of activity with geese since they had just arrived from the south and were seeking for a spot to nest.” It must be pretty amusing to watch the geese compete for nesting sites and defend their territories.
The first set of chicks had hatched, as Mike had noticed. So, while waiting for the beavers to arrive, he began photographing the geese.
He stated, ”
“When they’re little, they’re like little tennis balls with legs.”
Mike was sitting among some reeds on the riverside one night when he noticed a mother geese with a huge brood of chicks. One by one, the newborn geese began to crawl under their feathers to sleep.
Mike counted 16 fluffy babies cuddled under their mother’s protecting wings on that particular day.
Mike stated, ”
“I was startled to learn that this lady had 16 children, so I continued returning every night to look for her and her children.” Every day, it appeared as though she had a larger group.
Mike then counted 25 chicks, then 30 the next day, until eventually spotting the mother geese and her spouse with 47 kids.
Then Mike understood that this wonderful lady was looking after the children of several other households. This is a regular occurrence in regions with a large number of nests, such as cities and suburbs.
Some birds, according to scientists, nurture their chicks in a nursery, where females leave young brood in the care of another, usually older female who has expertise parenting kids.
Mike recognizes that this geese was bred to work.
He stated, ”
“It was incredible how calm she was in the midst of so many girls.” She appears to be a patient mother.
