Initiative Gives Elderly And Terminal Dogs A Home For Their Last Days

People are more likely to adopt puppies than older or terminally ill dogs, who may wait days or even months for someone to notice them and give them a chance. Unfortunately, many of these dogs are euthanized, which is why a New York City-based organization has been working on an initiative to help these pooches find a forever home.

According to Sarah Brasky, executive creator of Foster Dogs, Inc, numerous local shelters approached the group asking assistance for aging or ailing dogs in their care, which led to the brilliant idea of developing a dedicated dog care program.

The effort was dubbed »fospice,» a term derived from the words Foster (to encourage or welcome) and Hospice (hospice or asylum).

Sarah, according to CBSNews, said:

“These dogs are senior citizens and/or critically sick, and they do not deserve to die at a shelter.” They require so little and return so much affection. It’s all about giving safety and a caring environment.”

Fospice homes and families often receive the “BarkBox,” a monthly dog subscription box that includes snacks from local bakeries, financial support for the charity, and even a charming professional picture shoot.

The organization now maintains a “Foster Roster” database with over 3,000 New York people interested in caring for a dog in need. The goal of this project is to not only find homes for the animals, but also to ensure that the homes are appropriate for their requirements. So far, 55 dogs have been adopted from 22 rescue organizations.

Tracy Slagle, a project participant, stated:

“Because you only have so much time with a Fospice, it’s critical to make every day matter.”

This charity is also responsible for funding the final expenditures when a dog dies.

Tracy stated,

“I can’t image not being in Fospice; I plan to keep a ‘Fospice’ dog in my house at all times.”

The charity relies on donations to make all of this possible. In 2018, the show was renamed “Chloe’s Fospice Friends” in honor of the late Chloe Kardoggian, one of its most ardent fans.

According to Sarah, the organization’s goal is to grow across the country and save as many pets as possible.

Sarah stated,

“…We tell folks they’re saving a dog…they’re doing something that not everyone wants to do.” The dog is quite grateful.”
