Pelicans That Waited Years For Pups Are Excited An Egg Hatched

Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue in Australia has some extremely unusual inhabitants, including a couple of pelicans that have waited six years to become parents and are obviously pleased when an egg hatches.

Mr. Percival and his partner have nested and cared for their eggs for years in the hopes of having children, but none have hatched in over 6 years. When his caretakers put another pelican’s egg in his nest, everything changed.

“Mr. Percival has never given up on having a pelican girl. We pity him since he seems depressed whenever he sees newborn pelicans in the vicinity. So we did something fantastic for him this time because we truly wanted to make him happy.”

Pelicans in Australia dwell in colonies and are mostly found in broad areas of open water with no aquatic vegetation. They can deposit one to three eggs each year. When the chicks hatch, they are completely naked, but their bodies rapidly turn gray as feathers grow and cover them.

Everyone was waiting for Mr. Percival’s reaction when his adopted egg finally hatched; the two pelicans had waited years for this moment.

The workers of the rescue facility posted on social media:

“Mr. Percival felt pleased with himself. He had us in tears. He and his girlfriend are smitten with their newborn pelican baby, as you can see.”

The pelican has shown himself to be a loving and proud father to his young, sharing parenting duties with his spouse. The carers are overjoyed, noting that the young child is growing up healthy and that his father is constantly looking after him.

Mr. Percival has a strong relationship with his caregivers. They’ve followed his progress since he was rescued on Chambers Island in Maroochydore, Queensland, 18 years ago. He was frequently getting tangled up in fishing lines and hooks and required assistance.

Due to a major damage to one of the bird’s wings, the keepers completed the necessary permissions to transfer it to the sanctuary.
