When A Man Tries To Fix A Gas Leak, He Is Shocked By What He Finds

When a homeowner in Tennessee discovered a gas leak on his property, he immediately requested repairs. When the repairmen arrived, they determined the leak wasn’t caused by normal wear and tear. As the source of the breach was being examined, it was found that the basement crawl area was being used as a temporary den by a sleeping bear family.

Rescuers from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and Appalachian Bear Rescue were quickly summoned to the site, where three small cubs were gently rescued. However, the mom bear left during the ruckus, leading rescuers to believe that the cubs would have to be raised on their own.

Rescuers noted at the time, “Reunion with their mother is near to impossible.” “Mother bear is most likely to blame for the gas leak that set off the sequence of events that led to her three cubs being brought to [Appalachian Bear Rescue].”

The next best option for the rescuers was to bottle feed the cubs until they were old enough to be put with a foster bear family, however this strategy comes with its own set of dangers. “Regardless,” rescuers said, “she can no longer use the crawl space as a home, and the cubs are too young to be moved around in the cold.”

The mom bear, however, shocked everyone when she returned the next day to the house in search of her cubs, whom rescuers had named Jasmine, Jeannie, and Magic Bear.

“In regard to the three tiny cubs, we said on February 16, 2021: Reunion with their mother is near to impossible,” rescuers added, referring to their earlier Facebook remarks. “We’re glad we didn’t declare it was impossible outright, even though everything pointed that way. With so many people moving in and out of the crawl area, we were certain she’d never return. She did, though. We’re glad she did. Learning is a lifelong process.”

As a result of this unexpected change of events, rescuers devised a new strategy. Rather of looking for foster bear families for the cubs, they requested the homeowner to allow the bear family to spend the winter together in their improvised “den.” The homeowner, thankfully, said yes.

TWRA rescuer Dan Gibbs stated in a video showing this rescue mission, “Obviously, the ideal location for any baby animals is with its mother.” The mother bear is expected to return to the wild with her expanding family once spring arrives, according to rescuers.

In the video below, another rescuer, Coy Blair, says, “She’s a nice size and she was definitely ready to come and get her young.” As rescuers pushed them through an uncovered vent going into her chosen “den,” the mother bear quickly seized each of her small cubs.

We’ve never heard of a bear feeding pups beneath a house before, but we’re pleased the homeowner agreed to this unusual living arrangement so the bear family could stay together!
