If You’re Ever Down, Remember That Horses Can Grow Moustaches

Did you know that certain ponies have the ability to grow a mustache? This characteristic is particularly frequent in the Gypsy Vanner horse breed, which is noted for its luxuriant long mane, flowing feathers (the hair on the lower legs), piebald coat, and friendly and peaceful attitude. The same gene that is responsible for the horse’s luxurious tresses is also responsible for the mustache, regardless of sex – it may be a stallion, a gelding, or even a mare!

Horse enthusiasts on the internet appear to be split on the subject of the horse mustache. ”I think it’s the vilest thing ever…shave it!” Ugh! Shave it!” That was one horse owner’s reaction. Another reader was less harsh but nonetheless dubious, saying, “It’s somewhat cute in an odd sense, but if it were my horse, I would definitely shave it off!!” A Gypsy horse breeder, on the other hand, would never shave the horse’s face since the stubble is considered a desirable characteristic and a good omen for the owner.

These hirsute horses seem fantastic to us at Bored Panda, especially when coupled with an equally appealing mane-style. What are your thoughts? Take a look at the horse images below to see for yourself!
